About me

Hi, I'm Laura! welcome to my website.

I'm so happy that you are here. If you've landed on this website you probably already know that I'm an author, and that I write mainly for children and young adults. I also have a PhD in Nineteenth Century Literature, and I love teaching and talking about books and reading.

In 2014 I won the Montegrappa Scholastic Prize for New Children's Writing, and that was the start of all of this. my first children's book 'Poppy Pym and the Pharaoh's Curse' was published the following year by Scholastic. Poppy had three more adventures and was shortlisted for other awards including the Sainsbury's Children's Book Awards. You can find out more about Poppy in the 'Middle Grade' section of this website.

I also write a Middle Grade series about a girl called Effie Kostas. These books were inspired by the Women's Marches and by the incredible young activists who are fighting for a better world and making their voices heard. I was so excited to hear that Vote For Effie was shortlisted for the 2020 Blue Peter Book Awards.

My debut YA novel, 'A Sky Painted Gold', was published by Scholastic in 2018, and went on to be shortlisted for the YA Book Prize, The Books Are My Bag awards, and The Romantic Novelist's Association Awards, amongst others. This book was followed by Under a Dancing Star, a Much-Ado About Nothing Prequel set in 1930's Italy (of course!). I am currently working on more YA and Middle Grade novels.

I love Georgette Heyer novels, Cornwall, Fred Astaire films, travelling to far flung places, recipe books, Jilly Cooper, gin, poetry, Eva Ibbotson, cosy woollen jumpers, Edith Nesbit, crisp autumn leaves, Being near the sea, Jack Gilbert, new stationery, sensation fiction, salted caramel, Rufus Sewell's cheek-bones, dogs, and drinking lashings of ginger beer.
