About me

Hi, I'm Laura and welcome to my website.

I suppose you could say that I wear many hats professionally speaking, but that each of those hats is made out of books. And also the hats are actually crowns. I just decided that. I recently completed a PhD in the English Literature department at the University of Warwick where I taught about nineteenth century literature, feminism and children's literature (A perfect combination!) I am also an award winning writer, and the author of the 'Poppy Pym' books.

Originally from the Midlands, I moved to Canterbury to attend the University of Kent where I studied English and American Literature (with a year in Tennessee - where I wrote lots of poetry and started a serious love affair with southern accents, southern manners, porches, country music, biscuits, and the word y'all). I stayed at the University of Kent to do my MA in English Literature, with a dissertation on Walter Pater and reading and went on to the University of Warwick where my PhD thesis was about the figure of the reader in nineteenth century literature.

In 2014 I won the Montegrappa Scholastic Prize for New Children's Writing, and my first children's book 'Poppy Pym and the Pharaoh's Curse' was published the following year by Scholastic. the second book in the series, 'Poppy Pym and the Double Jinx' was published by Scholastic in September, 2016, the third book, 'Poppy Pym and the Smuggler's Secret', and the fourth and final (for now!) book, 'Poppy Pym and the Beastly Blizzard' were released in 2017. My debut YA novel, 'A Sky Painted Gold', is being published by Scholastic in 2018, and I am currently working on more YA and Middle Grade novels.

I love Georgette Heyer novels, Cornwall, Fred Astaire films, travelling to far flung places, recipe books, Jilly Cooper, gin, trashy television shows about witches/hospitals/cakes, poetry, cosy woollen jumpers, Edith Nesbit, crisp autumn leaves, Jack Gilbert, new stationery, sensation fiction, salted caramel, feminism, Rufus Sewell's cheek-bones, dogs, and drinking lashings of ginger beer.
